What do the stars hold? Techies want to know

Bangalore: Politicians making a beeline to the astrologer during elections is not new. But now, it’s techies. Some consult astrologers for timely delivery of projects or a new job, while others bring issues concerning promotions or offshore assignments. The number of software professionals seeking consultation is increasing manyfold, say leading city astrologers.

Not only are techies interested in knowing what the stars hold, they are also keen on learning the science. The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, which has been conducting astrology-training courses since 1997, found more than half the students in one batch were techies, says Dr Krishna Kumar, head of its astrology department.

Bangalore has 18 astrology institutes out of which about 500 students pass out every year. Fifty per cent of them are technology students, post-graduates or engineers. Even doctors and scientists have taken up these courses.

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan launched a two-year course in 1997 with help from astrologer B V Raman of the Indian Council of Astrology. Students can either study a one-year basic course or go in for in-depth study in the second year.

A similar course is offered by the Indian Federation of Astrologers (IFA), which teaches palmistry and awards degrees like Samudrika Ratna , Samudrika Shastracharya , Vaastu Ratna, Vaastu Shastracharya. Students can opt for courses under the semester system here. It also conducts a six-month numerology course.

Over the past two years, the IFA has seen a jump in the number of techies and IT students , says chief Datta Shetty . There is no age limit or any religious restriction to join these courses, he says.

Corporate astrology

Even the IT-BT sector has been unable to resist the attraction of astrology. Astrologers advise boards on business decisions like launch time, branding and ethos, and also help clarify strategy, management structure and client relationship.

Astrology in university

The State Astrologers Union has proposed that Bangalore University teach astrology as a subject. Potti Sriramulu University, Hyderabad, and Lal Bahadur University, Delhi , teach astrology as a subject of study.

Bangalore to get ‘astrology mall’

BANGALORE: When you step into this supermarket, you can find your future. A few years ago, nobody would have predicted this. But, soon Bangalore will boast of an exclusive supermarket, perhaps the first of its kind in the country.

It’ll house soothsayers: astrologers, numerologists, palmists, tarot-card readers, horoscope specialists – all under one roof.

The city will have 10 such supermarkets, the first one opening in J P Nagar by September first week. The supermarket will also have astro-related materials like Rudraksha beads, gems and stones, yantras, puja materials and books relating to astrology.

It is not just about fortune telling. If an astrologer suggests a puja, the supermarket will arrange it for you. The concept is like a multispeciality hospital where all specialists are available under one roof, says promoter Ramesh Tulsian.

Named Star and Planet, the supermarket will have branches in Marathahalli, H S R Layout, Vijayanagar, Rajajinagar, R T Nagar, H S B R Layout, Kasturinagar, Sarjapur and Electronic City.

But, it won’t be smooth sailing for budding fortune tellers. They have to pass a written test and attend an interview. An expert panel will finally select them. Only then can they set up shop.
